Dry-Rubbed Ribs Meet Memphis Tourist Heaven
Tucked off General Washburn’s Escape Alley, Charles Vergos’s Rendezvous Restaurant is touted as a Memphis institution. Highly recommended by both friends and websites alike, Rendevous is said to have the best ribs in town. Unfortunately, like everything else in Memphis, Rendezvous got the tourist bug and has exchanged its authenticity for a $17 plate of ribs and iced tea that is not fresh brewed but manufactured by Nestea and made of syrup. To make the tourists happy, they now serve wine. And to advertise the fact, each waiter is forced to wear a large red button which read simply “We have wine”. No self-respecting southerner drinks wine with ribs.

in the future consider: Cozy Corner on North Parkway Sorry you didn't have a truely great Memphis experience... Posted by: ncpindc at December 25, 2004 12:27 AM Wow! I've never heard such. As a former Memphian now stuck in Atlanta, the land of Sonny's barbaque if you can call it barbaque, this is suprising. The Rendezvous has the best BBQ around, servered just the way it has been since the doors opened in 1948. The waiters are usually long timers and are terrific. The restuarant hasn't changed since I begain going in the early 70s (with the exception of the addition upstairs) and neither have the ribs. So I don't think "going tourist" is accurate. Next time your passing through, get your facts straight. Tourists get there because of local's recommedations! What better references can I give? As for your subscribers, don't let this review stop you from experiencing the Rendezvous' atmosphere or ribs. They are the best anywhere. Why do you think they do so well selling them to folks over the internet? As for the tea. No one goes to the Rendezvous for the tea. Look around. Most folks are drinking Coke and Beer with their ribs! Posted by: Tammy Simeona at July 12, 2005 9:52 AM Post a comment |
