Misogynist Milk Chocolate, or, Mine Candybar Doth Protest Too MuchI go to the grocery store almost every day, looking for something to cook for dinner. As you might guess, I had to buy one. I mean, really, sexist candy? I checked the ingredients for some hint as to this bar’s manliness, and found the following: milk chocolate, raisins, flour, and sugar. That’s it: milk chocolate with raisins and cookie crumbs. Besides white chocolate, which doesn’t even count, milk chocolate is the un-manliest kind out there, and I just don’t see how dry, shriveled grapes could possibly suggest anything complimentary to anyone’s machismo. As for the taste, Yorkie is nothing special. The chocolate is better quality than you’d find in a Hershey’s bar, and I have nothing bad to say about adding raisins and cookie to it, but the result is just … fine. Not something I need to spend $2 for over a $0.55 pack of Raisinettes and maybe a $0.45 cookie. And definitely not something that makes me feel all manly and ready for a fight. A beer, perhaps, but girls drink that too. Posted by maw at September 6, 2006 5:20 PMTrackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsHeeeee hehehehe. It's always bizarre what an advertising agency will come up with after a hard night of crappy coffee and one too many weary admonishments to think outside the box. Posted by: zaf at September 7, 2006 10:03 AM Is it just me, or is that candy bar named after a small, cute, "girly" breed of dog? Posted by: Melanie at September 7, 2006 10:25 AM Flickr user Gleish reports: "Not sure how long Yorkie bars have been around for in the States, but I can give you the history leading upto the present marketing strategy... Yorkie bars have been around in the UK for decades. Made by Rowntrees (who were bought like so many food companies by Nestle). The original Yorkie Bar was just a plain chocalate bar made up of "Six Man Sized Chunks!". For many years the TV adverts featured truckers who would never be without their Yorkie. Over the years they have added a couple of new types of Yorkie Bar including the raisin and biscuit bar above. A few years ago they relauched the Yorkie Bar with new wrapping and the "Not for Girls" slogan... The relaunched included a new TV ad campaign which was quite tongue-in-cheek.... In all fairness I think the relaunch came at about the same time as Mars had decided to relaunch the Mars Bar (same as the Milkyway Bar in the States). Mars announced that they wanted to make it more appealing to women by A: giving it a fluffy new logo and b: making the bar smaller (price stayed the same..). The Yorkie move I think was more in response to that.... Just a bit of fun." Posted by: Michael at September 10, 2006 4:47 PM Heehee, the "Not for girls!" bit is cute though. And useful! If you check the Nutrition Facts more carefully, you'll see why. That particular bar is incredibly fattening. From first-hand experience, being a girl, I'll say that we do not like the idea of getting fat. I myself am 175cm and 9 stone and would like to stay that way ;) So when occasionally deciding to get a little treat like a candy bar that nifty label helps muchly XD Posted by: Sarah at June 29, 2007 7:39 PM Post a comment |
