WHAT?!?! Oh no!!! *gasp* Totally changing my lunch plans and trekking over there today.

They're already closed. They closed yesterday, for good.

Ouch - according to a friend of mine who had ordered a Thanksgiving Turkey from them, either yesterday or today would be the final day.

What a bummer! I coulda used one more sandwich from there (and the workers coulda used one more paycheck).

Apparently the Dallas and Chicago locations are still up. I was in the Houston store in 2000, and it was packed beyond belief - I wonder what caused their demise...over-expansion, supplier issues, bad management?

Eeee! I bloody live at this place! They can't close! Where will I get my awesome bread and me premade salmon and my huge-ass steaks and my unbaked cookie dough and my perfect sandwiches and my asparagus with wierd sauce!!! Say it ain't so (or at least say they're having a closedown sale...)!

Balduccis is probably the next best thing around here for people in mourning. Oh man... this sucks!

I got word yesterday from some Altanta friends that the Buckhead Eatzi's is closing. I felt sad but a large sigh of relief because it was happening in Atlanta and not Rockville. So much for that. Wonder what's going on? I'll dream of their sandwiches forever more.

I am NOT surprised - this place was way overpriced, only thing I could afford were the 2-for-1 refrigerated foods marked the last hour they were open every day!

The Houston location just closed as well - but the Chicago one may be stay open because it was sold to a private group of investors earlier this year.

General consensus is some kinda on the quiet corporate thing to keep stock price high right until the chop (I didn't even know they were they publicly traded- were they?)- employees were all fired with no notice and told final checks were in the mail.

Whole Foods - whose completiton most blame for the failure, has come out with an offer to take any holiday orders from Eatzi's customers...and they're holding a job fair for Eatzi's employees in Georgia. Way to sweep in there all sketchy, Whole Foods.

Wow...What a shocking blow! Peter and I were there every Sunday to buy a week's worth of wonderful things. We drove miles out of our way to do so, it was worth the trip. I feel for the nice employees who we got to know over the years. I hope they land well. Nice time to be put out without a job. As far as food quality goes, no one can top their creme brule' among other things. We were crushed to discover the 'store closed' signs when we pulled up today. Wish I'd known. I would have purchased all the striatta in the store. Anybody got a good cranberry orange bread recipe? I really do hope they come back in some fashion to the DC area. Eatzi's would be so welcome in Northern Viginia...Balducci's and Whole Foods are lame by comparison. We will shop at neither by protest!

I was there, I think, on the 16th. A truck was pulled up to the door and some other shoppers told me they had closed early. I stopped by Tuesday, the day after I returned from the holiday, and saw the sign saying they are closed permanently. I am truly going to miss that place--from to the crab cakes and salmon croquettes, pasta bar, the fresh made salads to the red velvet cake and rice. With this closing, I've lost one of the things I (a recent transplant) love most about the DC area. Whole Foods doesn't even come close with its recipes, and Balducci's has always been my slightly disappointing, second choice and besides doesn't offer the scope or variety.

I just stopped in Eatzi's for a make-to-order salad a few weeks ago. Little did I know, it would be my last. I'm so sorry to see them go. And those poor folks -- how awful.

My mom likes to eat there when she visits. She likes their cornbread b/c it has real corn kernels in it. She'll be so sad....

Aww! I live way out past Dulles Airport and have a friend in Rockville. Every time I visit her we would go to Eatzi's so I could get some Striatta bread. I told her this morning to go buy me some and she was all "uhh didn't I tell you?"

I'm so upset!!

I left the US two years ago and was going to visit in a couple of month....my first food stop was going to be eatzi's...I had been waiting for quite a while for this :(
